Introduction
Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms in the blood or other body fluids that can cause illness and disease. These microorganisms can be transmitted through contact with contaminated blood and body fluids.
When bloodborne diseases are mentioned, most people think of AIDS, but in reality the hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses are much more common. Transmitted through blood and other body fluids, HBV and HCV attack the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease and even death.
HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is transmitted through unprotected sex or from exposure to blood and blood products. AIDS is usually fatal, though it may take years for symptoms to appear.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), as of 2006, an estimated 1.1 million people in the US were living with HIV infection, with 21% undiagnosed. The CDC estimated that approximately 56,300 people were newly infected with HIV in 2006. Most are between the ages of 25 and 49 and are active members of the workforce.
